Synopsis

This Vivid feature is based (very) loosely on the mainstream movie, "Scent of Woman" with Al Pacino. 

(warning - this synopsis and the scene by scene descriptions contain plot spoilers!)

Bobby Vitale plays a blind guy married to Sky Fox.  Sky is going away on a weekend camping trip, and airhead Kira Kener is hired to look after Vitale.  Vitale apparently knows Kira from high school and she volunteers she was "the biggest slut in high school."  Vitale passes the time listening to inane television shows like "The Burbank Sluts", a take off on "Hollywood Squares".    Cutie pie April is one of the contestants.  The movie cuts to the "Burbank Sluts" set and some backstage sex antics.  Dimwit Kira annoys Vitale, so he leaves the house and walks down the street, encountering a blond street hooker and tapping ladies' asses with his cane.  He also sniffs the pussies of ladies who are unlucky enough to walk by him.  Eventually, Vitale hooks up with the blond hooker.  Kira finds him after the hooker services him, and takes him back to his apartment where they resume watching "Burbank Sluts".  Sexually obsessed Vitale does Kira, and discovers her pussy has the perfect scent.

A lot of fuck for the buck here, considering the bonus scenes.  "The Scent" has five scenes and Vivid includes a very generous collection of bonus scenes lifted from other recent titles from the studio.  All in all, there are twelve scenes that run just a hair over two and one-half hours. 

What's Not

"The Scent" is rather short, just 77 minutes long.  However, Vivid makes up for this by including many bonus scenes (see below for a detailed listing). 

The constant scene cuts during Kira's first scene to show Sky Fox (the red head masturbating in the van) were superfluous and distracting.  I wanted to see Kira, not some marginal chick playing with herself.  I've said it before, but it bears repeating -- jumping back and forth between two unrelated scenes is seriously annoying and usually kills the heat of a scene!  Why a director and/or editor would break away over and over from the action involving the main star is beyond me.    

Kira's anal scene is limited to one position and is relatively brief.  I appreciate that Kira is willing to perform anal, unlike many Vivid girls, but at this point, shouldn't she be able to handle 2-3 positions and do it for for longer than 85 seconds (I timed it).  Also, no multiple angles available during the anal sequence. 

No starlet identification before or after the movie.  In addition, no ID for the starlets was provided in the bonus scenes, although the movie is listed. 

Viewers are forced to watch commercials when the disc first loads.  To get around it, you have to stop the disc completely and then hit play. 

Play By Play

Below is a detailed description of each scene:

I got a "Disc Error" when I tried to view the "Cast Clips" and "On the Set" bonus room on my Koss 216 DVD player.  The bonus scenes and outtakes were playable on my Sony 560-D, however, I also encountered a problem.  On my first attempt to view the outtakes the machine bombed out with a C:13:00 error, which is the player's equivalent of the "blue screen of death" in Windows.  I had to turn off the machine completely to view the disc again.  When I tried to view this part of the disc again, it worked OK.   

Last Word

The plot here is paper thin.  Although "Scent of Woman" appears to be the inspiration, this cannot really be considered the porn version or a parody.  The similarities begin and end with the fact that each movie revolves around an abrasive, blind man.  This premise in "The Scent" is treated as an odd farce, as the script contains many attempts at humor.  However, many of the stabs at comedy fall flat.  The sex is typical of Vivid fare, intended mainly to appeal to couples.  Two anal scenes are included, but both are brief and try hard not to offend.  There was a great deal of oral sex in this movie, both blowjobs and eating at the Y. 

"The Scent" is most appropriate for couples and fans of Kira Kener.  Kira appears in three scenes (two in the main feature and one of the bonus scenes). 

Overall Rating:  C+ (2.40) -> B- (dvd version bumped up for generous amount of bonus scenes & extras)

Second Opinion? 

In a very cursory review, Ben Marco at AVN rated the content of this feature 6 and production values 8.  He wrote that the sex feels "phoned in" and the attempts at comedy "never really gets off the ground."

JayDee rated this disc a 3 (of out of 5).  He says the disc features some "good stuff" with Renee LaRue, April and Kira but the scenes are "short" and "hard to follow."  [RAME 01.15.03]
